YOUNG PEOPLE gave up their half-term holiday to help clean litter from parts of Derby.
Two litter picks took place this week, organised as part of Operation Relentless, a project aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour.
About 15 young people, aged between 11 and 15, spruced up Cheviot Street, in Derby, and Knightsbridge Park, in Mackworth, as part of the event, organised by Mackworth Neighbourhood Team.
Operation Relentless is a six-week project which began in September, with the aim of dealing with anti-social behaviour and addressing local concerns to increase confidence and community safety.
The operation has included graffiti removal, fire service home safety checks and improvements to street lighting.
Pete Matthews, neighbourhood manager for Derby Homes, went on the litter picks.
He said: "The children were very enthusiastic and we ended up with two areas that looked a lot better then when we started.
We had two residents come and help us and the whole thing gave a good sense of community spirit."
The young people were volunteers from two groups.
Some came from Enthusiasm, a group of youth workers who help children most at risk of offending. Others were from the Youth Justice Service, which works with children who have been dealt with by the courts.
